THE HISTORY OF ROSE HILL CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 1885 — 2005
The Rose Hill congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized on the first Sunday in September 1885. The organizational meeting was held in a little log cabin, a school building, about one-half mile from where the present church building stands now. The organizing minister was Rev. B.A. Ingram, Sr. He was the father of the B.A. Ingram that is the namesake of the Older Adult Sunday School Class.
Since then the church has gained city water, more new classrooms, carpeting, central air and heat in the entire building among other improvements. In 1986 the church was expanded with the construction of a new sanctuary. The first worship service was held in this building in December 1986. The old sanctuary is currently used as a classroom. The parking lot was paved in October 1999.
Rose Hill CPC hired it’s first full-time minister in January 1981, Rev. W.D. Brian. The second full time minister was Rev. Michael Qualls, who came "home" to Rose Hill in 1983.
Rose Hill CPC was a member of Bartholomew Presbytery in the Synod of Arkansas until the denominational restructure of 1988. It is now in Arkansas Presbytery within the Synod of Great Rivers which includes churches in parts of West Tennessee, Missouri and Arkansas. Rose Hill had the privilege of hosting the last meeting of Arkansas Synod before the restructure and has played an active roll in Arkansas Presbytery and in the denomination, having had members of the congregation serve on Presbyterial Boards for many years and a member on the General Assembly Board of Stewardship for 2 terms. Our last pastor, Patrick Fleming, served a term as moderator of the Synod of Great Rivers. Elder Donald Hogue serves as a commissioner to General Assembly in 1989. Elder B. Denise Adams, served as a commissioner for Arkansas Presbytery to the 175th General Assembly in 2005.
Apparently, there were 17 members on the church roll in 1885. When the books were updated in 1910 there were 37 members on the church roll.
The first elders of the church were: J.C. Myhand (grandfather of long time members, Thelma Hughes, Maxine Shirey and Hagin Myhand), A.H. Owens and Elic Brown, with Rev. B.A. Ingram, Sr. serving as the first pastor.
The present church site was donated by Rev. B.A. Ingram, Sr. The first deed was never recorded, but in 1943 Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Dean, who owned the property behind the church, deeded the land again and this deed was legally recorded.
A one-room clap-board sanctuary was built on the present site in 1898. According to church records (or lack of records) it would be hard to tell how many times the one-room sanctuary has been repaired and remodeled. In 1951 the sanctuary was again remodeled and four classrooms were built on the west side. A Fellowship Hall with kitchen was added in 1955. In 1957 the sanctuary acquired a brick face and the steeple was added. In 1962 a deep well was drilled nearby and the church gained, running water. Restrooms were added. In 1971 the sanctuary was remodeled once again with new ceiling lights, paneling and the pulpit area was redesigned by James Seymore. |
